» RFecho - Why Does Packaging Matter So Much?

It occurred to me that this article and the article about Camel's new cigarettes present the same lie to young women: It doesn't matter what it does to you, all that matters is how it looks. Starve yourself to be skinny so you will be accepted, smoke cigarettes with chic, girly packaging and you will be cool. I agree with the author that the best defense for our daughters is to present them with the TRUTH. I pray I'll be able to counteract the LIES my young daughters will hear and see daily as they get older, and that they will know that their value does not come from their appearance or from peer validation. It is an uphill journey, but if parents and other youth workers don't take on the challenge, this generation of girls will experience untold suffering (emotionally, physically, and otherwise). My girls are still toddlers, but I'm strapping on my helmet already to charge forward into this battle!

I am strapping on my helmet, too! I have an interesting situation because I have boy/girl twins, so my daughter will be learning how to respect herself and expect respect from others in the context of growing up with a male sibling of the same age. And vice versa. Should prove interesting! I just don't want my kids to be limited in what they think they can do because of their gender, nor do I want people to make assumptions about them based on their appearance. It will be a battle, but I am ready!
