Overview of Youth Development Topic

I'm so thrilled to be joining the Education and Development team here at Suite101.com! I have lot of ideas for topics I'd like to cover in the coming months. My first articles will deal with emotional management and tobacco prevention. There will be an article for each this week as well as several related articles in the weeks to come. Hopefully these pieces will provide you with useful information and ideas in your work with kids.

In the coming months, I will be writing about issues pertaining to teen safety and health, such as sexual harassment, body image, cyber bullying, and refusal skills. We will also be discussing character education: how to build character traits, as well as ideas for service and activities to develop empathy. As skill development is a huge part of promoting resiliency in teens, I will regularly offer strategies to help kids become more effective problem solvers, decision makers, and emotion managers. Social and communication skills are a big part of this area, too.

We will also discuss ways to support your work with kids: how to avoid gender bias, how to develop strong relationships, how to set limits, and how to become a better role model, just for starters. Finally, we will talk about today's society and how it impacts kids (for better or worse), and what we can do in our work with kids to help offset some of the negative influences of media, marketing, and other cultural pressures.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions for this topic, and to participate freely in discussions. If these issues interest you, please bookmark this site and check back often.
